550 miles across cal-nev

we drove from the pacific ocean at eureka, ca. to austin, nv(mid nevada)-550 miles and we're tired-left the redwoods at dawn and by lunch we were in the desert of nevada.we followed the route of the pony express most of the afternoon-some of the stations where they changed horses are preserved or replicated- austin is an old goldmining town that once had 10,000 people-now has about 500-one rich guy had a granite castle built to look like a roman tower-
too tired to say more-

Redwoods - these trees are REALLY BIG!

We drove into the Redwoods this afternoon and were totally blown away. These trees are so tall it just boggles the mind! Some are over 300 feet tall and over 1000 years old. That is hard to grasp. We drove and looked, stopped and took photos and then drove to the "Lady Bird Johnson Grove" and got out and took a hike to see the spot where she dedicated this grove 50 years ago.

I hope you can see Steve or me in these pictures or our car. We tried to put something for comparison in the picutres.

We are spending the night in Eureka and will head east tomorrow. Probably won't stop for many pictures from here on in.

Last morning in Oregon

This morning we headed out to the beach early to search for agates. Of course we did not find any, but we had fun looking and while we were there I picked up some rocks to share with Mike Risk who likes to "tumble". Then we drove up the Rogue River about 10 miles for Steve to wet his line. Try as hard as he might there were no fish and no bites even! It was a beautiful morning and a beautiful place, but the fish would not cooperate. There were a lot of fishermen in boats at the mouth of the river near Gold Beach and the word is they were catching chinook and silver salmon. We didn't have a boat tho! :-)

After that we just packed up and went south. Continuing on Hwy 101 we drove into California and saw more beautiful sights along the way. The monoliths in the ocean are just incredible. We saw one called, "Arch Rock". I will add a picture of it.

We found a little local lunch spot in Klamath, California. This is in the midst of the redwoods parks. Some parks are state and some are national. More of that in next post.
